The Basalt House is a two-story residence with an attic, located in Kamatero. The main element of the design is the division of the building’s mass into two distinct parts (“frames”), one introverted and one extroverted, corresponding to the spaces they contain. The seemingly unified prism of the residence contrasts with the interior floor levels, which are vertically offset, creating visual escape routes and varied ceiling heights. This allows for a fluid distribution of movement through the central staircase. The spatial program follows the vertical arrangement of levels, with the living areas situated on the first, unified level, while the sleeping areas are distributed across the two following independent levels. These levels feature private outdoor spaces through balconies or recesses within the building’s structure. Simultaneously, all levels open up to the accessible rooftop via the central staircase.
Due to the enclosed sides around the property, the need arose for two vertical routes for natural ventilation and lighting in the northwestern section of the building.
The combination of dark tones makes the overall design both dynamic and warm. The main facade materials include dark black tiles with a stone texture, which are placed inside the frames, brown-toned metallic elements, and black plaster. Additionally, planted beds have been strategically incorporated to function as privacy filters and to enhance the bioclimatic character of the building.
